Yakima boxing club is labor of love (USA Today)

YAKIMA, Wash. — Standing a few feet away, Eddie Ford watches two of his youngest pupils, ages 8 and 11, go through some light sparring in the half-ring at the Evans Boxing Club.

A smile forms on Ford’s face he watches the boys, the younger of which being the same age as Ford when he first started boxing, another reminder that his life has come full circle.

“It’s kind of funny. I look at them and get flashbacks,” Ford said of his earliest days working with legendary boxing trainer Glenn Evans. “I see some of the same attitude (I had when I started).”

It’s those simple moments that keep motivating Ford, 44, to head down nightly to the cramped gym in the basement of the Union Gospel Mission’s Community Youth Center at the corner of Fourth Street and Spruce Avenue near downtown Yakima.

“There’s nothing like home and this is home,” said Ford, who has been part of this club as a boxer and now a trainer for 36 years…Full Story
