The proposed mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr on March 13, 2010 is definitely off owing to disagreements in both camps on the how the contentious and controversial drug testing will be done and what agency will handle it.

Let us look back and answer some issues that contributed as to why the said mega fight went kaput.

Bad Move

Whoever made the decision to come out with the Olympic- style drug testing from Floyd Mayweather Jr’s camp should be crucified for putting the death knell on the biggest fight of our time. This is not only unprecedented and unparalleled in professional sports but it borders to the absurd. On the other hand, this is an admission of the amount of respect Mayweather have on Pacquiao’s fighting prowess despite Mayweather belittling his skills and ability in various interviews.

We should remember that in Mayweather’s 40 professional fights, he did not demand this kind of testing which is unheard of in professional boxing until this fight.

Although they may have some valid points with this demand especially in this day and age of Performance- Enhancing Drugs (PEDs), they could have asked the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which is the proper venue for this kind of issue to consider them in their drug testing.  They could have asked the commission for a hearing to hear their apprehensions and I’m sure the NSAC will be up to the task and educate them about the merits and demerits of such tests.  I’m sure Team Pacquiao will not refuse the said tests if a competent authority like the NSAC, who oversees all professional sports drug testing in the State of Nevada, demands it and warrants the test.

Instead, they went full blast with trial by publicity without showing any pieces of evidence or witnesses linking Pacquiao to using PEDs. Mayweather and their minions slander Manny Pacquiao’s name to anybody who would care to listen. It was a move that borders to idiocy. To me, this smacks of bad faith and utter disrespect to Manny Pacquiao.

Why jeopardize the fight with these unsubstantiated accusations that should have been confined only in gossip columns? Why deal in tabloid stuff when you are negotiating for the richest fight in boxing history?

Some people will say if you‘re clean and have nothing to hide, “why not just take the damn test and be done with it?”

We should understand that there’s a big difference between the Filipino and American cultures playing here. Rudyard Kipling once said in one of his poems that, “Oh East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.”

While an American would readily take the test to prove his innocence even if he knows that he is innocent in the first place just to appease his critics, this will not be the case to a Filipino. A Filipino will stand his ground if he feels that he is being coerced to do things that he feels don’t merit any considerations. A Filipino will be stubborn to a fault if he believes that his integrity is being questioned especially if he knows deep in his heart that the accusations are not true.

Manny Pacquiao doesn’t relish the fact that his integrity is being questioned. More so, being blatantly accused of being a cheater without proof by his nemesis. Being a true- blooded Pinoy, I can understand why Manny Pacquiao would rather walk away from millions of dollars than dignify these kind of unwarranted accusations.

Make no mistake about it, like many Filipinos, Manny Pacquiao is a proud man. If this was just an issue between ordinary people in Manila or in any other place in the Philippines and somebody accuses somebody of cheating, you can expect that blood will surely flow in order for the aggrieved party to clear his name.

Bad Press

The press went to town when Manny Pacquiao did not acquiesce to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s demand for an Olympic-style testing. Some media people were blaming Pacquiao for the collapsed of the mega fight yet they turned a blind eye on the fact that the accusations against Pacquiao were concocted by Floyd Mayweather, Sr.

They further fanned the blaze and tooted the line of a convicted felon, a confessed cocaine user and high school drop-out like it was gospel truth. If that is not an obvious indictment of the state of journalism in sports nowadays, I really can’t say. If Floyd Sr. is not the most polluted source that one can find, I really don‘t know.

The media did not bother to check the facts nor research on the issue properly. Instead of reporting facts, they resorted to conjectures. Instead of reporting the truth, they succumbed to rumors and innuendos.  Overnight, many respected sports personalities metamorphosed into gossip columnists and tabloid reporters. They stopped being objective and seekers-of-truth and unknowingly became peddlers of lies.

Bad Medicine

If we study the history of doping in sports, we can easily deduce that the usual culprits are athletes from first world countries who have the capability to do systematic sports doping. It all started with the athletes of the former Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact nations to give their athletes the edge against their western counterparts during the height of the Cold War.

The Mayweathers showed their ignorance regarding the Philippines’ capability when it comes to doping in sports by saying in one of their interviews that “we don’t know what they are capable out there”, or something to that effect, when referring to the country as a haven for steroids and other PEDs.

The only Asian country that is known to conduct systematic doping with its athletes is China. Who can forget the notorious Ma’s Army in athletics and their record-breaking swimmers a while back?

But the US and other western nations are not immune to cheating in sports. The names of Ben Johnson, Linford Christie, Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery are now forever linked to steroids and doping.

In the US professional sports ranks, the baseball ‘roid warriors like McGwire, Clemens, Bonds, Canseco and Sosa forever tarnished baseball. Even Tiger Woods is now being linked to PEDs because of his trainer. Boxing is not spared either. Fighters like Roy Jones Jr, Evander Holyfield, Fernando Vargas and Shane Moseley, just to name a few, have tested positive for steroids at some point in their careers.

In all of these cases, the accusations are backed up with pieces of evidence (syringe for Clemens) and witnesses (trainers) accusing a particular athlete of wrongdoings. In all of these cases, the accused athletes have been linked to people or laboratories/ companies like BALCO (Moseley and Bonds) that are known to deal in sports doping. In all of these cases, the accused athletes have been caught or have tested positive for doping (Jones).

In Manny Pacquiao’s case, not a single piece of evidence has been shown. In Manny Pacquaio’s case, not a single witness has come forward to accuse him of using PEDs. In Manny Pacquiao’s case, he has never tested positive for PEDs. In Manny Pacquiao’s case, the people around him have never been linked, accused nor convicted of engaging in illicit drugs.

Also Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy’s CEO was caught lying through his teeth and showed us his plain hypocrisy on this issue.  He was on record of refusing a more thorough drug-testing on Shane Moseley, an admitted steroid user in his proposed fight against Zab Judah yet they were very adamant to do this on Manny Pacquiao.

“Whatever tests they want them to take, Shane will submit to that. We are not going to do other tests than the Nevada commission requires.”

“The fact is Shane is not a cheater and he does not need to be treated like one.”

The reason Olympic-style drug testing is usually done on athletes in the off-season (e.g. when they are deep in training) is because that’s the time that the benefits of PEDs (e.g. hGH & anabolic steroids) will come in handy to build those muscles and tissues. An athlete should have been using these banned substances for a long time for any changes in the body and the desired results to occur. It’s not as if you will just shoot them into your system, and voila, the dramatic effect will take place immediately. Besides, if one is a long-time user, there will be very visible changes not only in appearance but also in the psychological make-up of the user.

Nowadays, steroids can now be detected in the hair and when a positive test comes back, the urine sample is then tested for confirmation. Also, hGH is only effective if they are used in conjunction with steroids, and contrary to popular belief, it can also be detected in urine (aside from blood) by using molecular ‘markers’ which could be used as evidence of doping.

So in this case, whether you test Manny Pacquiao for hGH and anabolic steroids, 24- days or 14- days or post fight, is really immaterial since if he was really using them in the past, he would have tested positive for both, while on the other hand, if he will be using them just weeks before the fight, with a window period of less than 30 days, the desired outcome will not take effect nor make an impact on his performance. They should be looking for amphetamines and its derivatives instead.

Badass

In this mega fight fiasco, finger-pointing is the order of the day. But one doesn’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out who’s the real badass and who’s not between the two protagonists.

They say, being a badass is not an act but a way of life. They say a badass doesn’t lie because a badass doesn’t need to lie. He is brutally honest and has a soft spot for the weak. He is a rugged man but possesses a calm and cool demeanor when dealing with everything in life.

So, between Manny and Money, who do you think is the real badass?

    @Ceddybaby:

Pacman is the Champion he should dictate the terms of the fight. 10 million is not abusurd. Gayweather is alreadly proven not to honor weight limits. The penalty is designed where it hurts most. Gayweather’s pocket.
You might have live in the Philippines for 10+ years. But that does make you an expert on Filipinos. Have you heard of Warays, Ilonggos or tribes (Ampatuans e.g.) in Mindanao? Please try to insult them and we’ll see if you will last 24 hrs. Refuse blood test. Please read line one.
How can you consider fighting hall of famers (Barrera, Morales, dela Hoya, Cotto etc) and win it is a form of Bob Arum’s factory product?Manufactured? Wake up pac hater!!!!!!End of discussion.

I find it funny that these Floyd fan keep on babbling the same stuff over and over XD

Face it fellas your boy is to blame here. He started this shit and now its destroying his very reputation, not like he had one to begin with hehehe. You keep ignoring the facts and only listen to the media and rumors. He accused Manny of doping when he’s known to have used illegal pain killers. If he had the balls from the start this wouldn’t happened.

manny manny manny… he is a undoubtedly a dangerous & ’strong’ overall as a boxer as can be seen on the tele (well, vs. hatton, cotto which began against oscar i might add, sorry!)

but boy, where the hell was manny approximately dating from ‘01 to 07′ when the ‘Gay’ mayweather as some manny’s fans favour to call him or whatever it is nowadays, its cute!

mayweather was dominating & without question the best pound for pound best fighter in the world (widely agreed by most boxing intelligents to be remained undefeated as he was rising up to be as he was was the p4p king & undefeated, until he retires. i know i know, ducking opponents mayweather seems to think a risky one.. which Bob Arum & Roach (ofcourse!) are the main supporters of this idea, but still, it is pretty cute.

The Fact is, by being just 30 & beaten 13 different world champions & took probably 5 world boxing belts at 5 different weight classes, by being just reaching up to 39 matches overall in achieving this, and owh, unbeaten as well.. now lets just be honest for once for boxing, it is insane! impressive!! once again, sorry, but where the hell was Manny at those years?

Now, Manny Pacquiao, to be honest havent heard of as being the same stage as mayweather or oscar or even hatton until he crazed an unforgettable beating of oscar’s professional life, which was & still is a classic, the reason: the birth of Manny Pacquiao as to be the best boxer to have ever lived.. 7 different titles & lets hope he wins his 8th this march..

however, lets face it, it is already there to be proven unofficially, even if manny wins his 10th title, as long as mayweather is around, man.. thats a difficult one for pacquiao believers.. (*taking all into account the words typed before & above*)

regardless of either of them is raised in the hardcore streets of Asia or America, what mayweather & manny are are boxers, the ones rich, world class & champions, as well above all 2 sports individuals.. in a boxing ring where a win, lose or draw & only the two of them are the true deciders of who might b the winner if the mega-fight will take place, lets just hope it will.. it is less reason why racial or cultural differences can be the major issue here..

as to the question, it is quite clear in my view, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Mayweather’s camp & Pacquiao’s camp are to be blame, to keep it basic..

it is wrong,(morally ofcourse!) to pin-point a potential opponent as a cheater.. well well well, if its not the guy who since 10 years ago everytime he kept winning & winning & winning, retired & back, yet still winning, were often made excuses towards him why he shouldnt win everytime he won throughout his career before he retired the best in the world & undefeated, now thats an ill truth of boxing…

if the olympic-style testing is ridiculous, well, lets just say mayweather is the guy who can bring it up, because AS A BOXER he can, it is that simple!

Pacquiao, he is a human warrior alright? most definitely in the ring, a true fighter, OK….
filing up a lawsuit against mayweather & his surroundings for calling him a cheater, in which pacquiao under no secret is worried it might spoiled his great & ‘rocky’ stunning wins so far, dear oh dear.. but thamn it, IT IS HILARIOUS!

    Excellent article again!
Indeed from a broader perspective, one can at this point discern the true intent of the parties. Arum should have heeded his initial instinct on Floyd- that Floyd never intended to fight Manny. I guess its only now that Floyd has seen the magnitude of his folly -very expensive and foolish strategy.

Too many blaming BS going on here. Look, mosley was never tested positive to any drugs yet he did them. He admitted it to a grand jury. He could have easily said no, and nothing could be proven. My point is that Pac CAN be doing SOMEthing whether he knows it or not. An oz of blood ruined this fight? WoW, I wanna blame floyd for being a lil baby but he has a right to his well being and safety. On pac’s side, he should have gave the damn blood. It goes both ways. It makes pac look slightly guilty for not excepting simple testing. And it also makes Floyd look scared for demanding it. BOTH sides are to blame. Bob Arum is a little selfish pr*ck too. Whatever, I’m done talking about this. It goes in circles when any fan with common sense can see faults in BOTH sides. Even the most bias of fans.

Ps. If mosley beats berto, then, he’s gonna take the welterweight division by storm. That includes Floyd and Pac. Everyone’s sleeping on him becuz he’s old… watch out now…

Both fighters blew this one. Rather than act as the stand up fighters they are, they gave in to their punk handlers. They became punks. The article at http://mybadassitudes.com puts it very nicely. Manny and Floyd are both much better than that and it is a shame that we are where we are with this fight.

before the nego started,we already know that pac vs floyd will never happen. floyd will try to make the nego difficult so the fight wont happen. it did not catch me by surprise that the attempt did not succeed because floyd really wont fight pac. floyd really has not guts to face in the right opponents who are capable of knocking him out. pac is that guy. all floyd’s posturing were all bluffs. he did not expect pac will accept mar.13 bec. he was still fresh from his fight with cotto. all those were bluffs. never believe him anymore. he comes from a dysfunctional family so you could never trust a single word they say. GBP was a fooled victim by the mayweathers, fools because they are aware of his antics. l o l

    To All Floyd huggers,

The coward named Floyd is a proven drug user – illegal drug to be exact – Xylocaine used to numb your fist (broken-LOL) and make punches received painless. The audacity of this Fraud to accuse someone of drug use that he is a guilty punk himself, what a hypocrite and a cheater – ah yes, he also cheated Juan Manuel Marquez by coming overweight over agreed limit, what a genuine CHEATER, FRAUD AND A COWARD.

Let him pick Adam Lambert (from American Idol) this should be a fight for him, LOL.

That super stupid ridiculous demand of a random blood testing is the most coward screwed up call of Floyd to distract and weaken Pac to gain his advantage of what he called to level the playing field – whatever… Floyd weight cheat over Marquez…Xylocaine cheat to numb his fists. So don’t ever blame innocent Pac coz the cavemen will hunt you down with big bowling pinballs.

Boxing is a brutal sport. BOXING 101: PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES.
The comission didnt protect Cotto’s face from Margarito’s plaster fists.
The comission also didnt protect Delahoya’s record from doping mosely.
That said, as boxers are supposed to protect themselves; Floyd did the right thing by asking for a highier standard from the top athletes. It sucks to be a statistic and Floyd refuses to be one.
I have always wondered how pacman kept his power up the weight classes and when he knocked out Diaz, I really started wondering. I dont think he juices but it crossed my mind and so many other people. Then came the Hatton, then COTTO Ko and Pacman can only do himself a favor by accepting Olympic style testing.
WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND CAN WALK AWAY FROM $30MILLION MINIMUM FIGHT BECAUSE OF BLOOD TESTS THEN ACCEPTS A LESSER FIGHT????????
I am a regular guy and a Pacman fan and thats what I think.
For the fight,,, Floyd wins hand-down because Pacman only wins when someone is infront of him.

to amos.. pac knocking people out? against diaz-his in and out fighting style could have not came from PED isn’t it? vs. dela hoya-his ring general ship, accuracy and the left straight in the middle in odlh’s gloves wasn’t cause by taking PEDs either.. the stupid face-first style of hatton and the right hook of pacquiao that almost killed hatton, pretty much not came from PEDs.. vs cotto, well he break the guy down with his patience and waiting cotto to commit a mistake.. the methods and gameplan pac and roach used for every fighter mentioned is not a result of taking any drugs.. performance enhancing drugs can give you better performance, more muscles etc. but not intelligence in the ring.. intelligence which mayweather sr. is lacking..WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND CAN WALK AWAY FROM 30M MINIMUM FIGHT COZ OF A BLOOD TEST THEN ACCEPTS A LESSER FIGHT?! most people will, people who values his honor than his money, pacquiao is fucking filthy rich anyway.. it’s not always about money.. if im the king, i won’t subject myself to any peasant’s new rules..
mayweather sr. once said “philippines has the best enhancing drugs” then why the hell pac did’nt shared it to his brother who’s a struggling boxer, or to other filipino athletes so that the philippines could win gold in the olympics…
mayweather is no tough guy.. the bobcats could have gone 40-0 if they cherry picked teams from the d-league, bottomline is, if mayweather won’t fight pac (juiced or not), fight a legit welterweight.. who’is atleast in the top five..
after pacquiao opted to fight clottey, who is a legit welter. gaywethear’s long list of possible opponents are from lightweights, campbell, malignaggi, even matt hatton’s name came up.. come on man, who wants to see this fights? then after the fight pbf will scream in the top of his lings that his the best by beating a lightweight?! come on man, being an all time great is not about 0 lost.. it’s about the opposition you took.. take a look at the top ten all-time greats, all of them lost to someone who is a worthy opponent..
and don’t be a spoiled brat imposing new rules, the sport is bigger than you.. what if the lakers and the cavaliers are in the nba finals, then suddenly kobe petitioned lebron to take olympic style drug testing because he moves damn fast for his size, sounds crazy right? got my point?

“Whoever made the decision to come out with the Olympic- style drug testing from Floyd Mayweather Jr’s camp should be crucified for putting the death knell on the biggest fight of our time.
We should remember that in Mayweather’s 40 professional fights, he did not demand this kind of testing which is unheard of in professional boxing until this fight.”

“Manny Pacquiao doesn’t relish the fact that his integrity is being questioned. More so, being blatantly accused of being a cheater without proof by his nemesis. Being a true- blooded Pinoy, I can understand why Manny Pacquiao would rather walk away from millions of dollars than dignify these kind of unwarranted accusations.”
“Make no mistake about it, like many Filipinos, Manny Pacquiao is a proud man. If this was just an issue between ordinary people in Manila or in any other place in the Philippines and somebody accuses somebody of cheating, you can expect that blood will surely flow in order for the aggrieved party to clear his name.”
—-u hit the nail right on the head, brother. There are really some people who deliberately refuse to understand Manny, the Filipinos in general. I salute u brother for a great work.

Who’s to blame??? I would say Manny Pacquiao… You know why? He broke the record of boxing, he beats Hatton in 3 rounds, he beats Cotto by knock out, and he is fast, a power puncher… Who would want to fight him??? Would you??? Watch Manny’s fight when he was younger and you will see how aggressive he was. That’s why his opponents scared of him and you would too!!!
