Miguel Cotto couldn’t handle Manny Pacquiao’s speed
That is what Miguel Cotto told his current trainer Emanuel Steward regarding his loss to Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.
In an interview with AOL Fanhouse, Emanuel Steward said the Puerto Rican WBA 154-pound champion told him it wasn’t the drastic weight cut or the 145-pound catch-weight that caused him to lose against the Filipino champion, it was Manny Pacquiao’s speed.
Steward asked Cotto “What happened in the (Pacquiao) fight?,” and Miguel didn’t say anything about the weight loss or catch-weight he simply answered Steward with “I couldn’t handle his (Pacquiao’s) speed.”
If the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight doesn’t happen a rematch with Miguel Cotto at Jr. middleweight is an optional fight for Pacquiao.
Steward went on to say that things would be different with him in the corner if Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao were to rematch. He said he would be able to help Cotto neutralize the speed of Pacquiao because he specializes in fast sparring partners and none of his fighters ever came back to the corner after a round saying they couldn’t handle the speed of their opponent.

5/5 of pacquiao’s latest victims had said in one form or another that pacquiao is too fast.can’t say the same thing with floyd.
Cotto can beat manny, but to beat manny cotto MUCH use his jab!!!! He much stop his speed by rocking manny with the jab!!!!!!!! GO COTTO!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you gone thru the ranks and came to have beaten Barrera, Morales, add that the two fights with JMM . that is very very telling. Let alone Barrera and Morales in a rematch and on a tri-logy. The heart, courage, focus, skills, power, and experiences of these two great fighters in the squared circle are next to none. But Pacquiao have negated them. Add to that bigger man, De La Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Clottey, Pacquiao had been successful in destroying them, sending some to their retirement.
@lefty*** what exactly about cotto manny 1 did you see that makes you believe cotto can beat manny. cotto is washed up it would be like floyd takin on mosley once more. makes no sense and its stupid. look manny ppv sales to drop once more
This articles validates how much of a badass Pacquiao is.
I just watch that fight a minute ago on HD video. I can tell one thing, speed is not the only problem in dealing with PAC , it’s his punch rate, accuracy and power! Both knockdowns on the 3rd and 4th rounds were a direct outcome of these abilities PAC posseses. Steward may claim he can control the speed, but he will not be able to deal with the rest of PACS arsenals.
The only way to deal with PAC is counter good like Marquez and have the power to back it up unlike Marquez. If you are a good counter puncher with power, you will eat PAC up! Mayweather is a good counter puncher but no power! His KO records is indicative of this.
I couldn’t agree more speed alone doesn’t kill. Manny has the complete package that people tend to overlook just because he isn’t as smooth as Mayweather. Mayweather looks smooth because he is a spot fighter, only throws a couple of punches a round spending the rest of the time avoiding getting hit. Outside of Castillo, noone else capitalized on the work rate and ring generalship the way Castillo did in their first bout. Although the judges gave Mayweather a gift that night and totally robbed Castillo at gun point, that is the blueprint to beat Mayweather. Judah had for 6 rounds, so did DLH until he guessed out and stood in front of Mayweather.
I think MAYWEATHER would lose to pacquiao….Pacquiao is TOO FAST for him[Mayweather]
Excuses, alibis, unacceptable demands, those are Mayweather’s way of saying: I do not want to fight Pacquiao because I’m afraid to fight him, I do not want to be destroyed inside the ring by this midget Filipino.
*******************************************************
Mayweather is a good and intelligent boxer, he can adjust his style of boxing to the situation. But, in boxing, style and intelligence are not the only factors to make a win. The most important thing in boxing other than style and strenght is courage. I think that’s what the difference between Pacquiao and Mayweather. Pacquiao is fast, strong, intelligent boxer and most of all brave and courageous. How about Mayweather, is he brave and courageous? I don’t think so. I see him as a very smart aleck individual but not a brave one. As a matter of fact I think he is a coward. Coward to the point that made him so scared of Pacquiao not to fight him inside the ring. Maybe one of Mayweather’s demands to fight Manny is for Manny to drop his defamation charge against him. Pacquiao will never agree to that demand because Pacquiao is a man of of integrity and principle. Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will never ever happen. I REPEAT: PACQUIAO-MAYWEATHER FIGHT WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN BECAUSE MAYWEATHER IS A COWARD AND WILL NEVER FIGHT MANNY PACQUIAO.
mayweather will make pacquiao look like an amateur. Lets not forget mayweather agreed to pacquiao’s outrageous terms. Welterweights normally use 10oz gloves manny wanted the 8 oz mayweather agreed. (Nevada changed the rule for Arum when Cotto fought Mararito) He also wanted 10 mil per pound mayweather agreed. Then mayweather made his demands for Olympic style drug test. Pacquiao refused. If mayweather didnt want to fight him he would have not agreed on the gloves or the outrageous penalty.
Psychically, stylistically and mentally Cotto fall short on fight night.
Psychically he was drained, there some speculations he weighted over 160lbs at some point while training.
Stylistically hew couldn handle Manny’s offensive (this includes speed, power etc.)
Mentally – His corner was way too green
Can you conclude then PACQUIAO IS JUST A BETTER FIGHTER? I Don’t think so. He was better that night and Cotto agrees.
Now, Look at Cotto @154 more natural no struggle, every jab had Foreman bouncing an loosing his balance, that’s probably how he hurt his knee.
More controlled, overboxed the faster Foreman although he need to improve on his defense. Remember it was short time he started with Steward.
Now at a different weight division where he doesn’t have to jump rope for hours to make weight. He has a corner that tells him what to do and he follows, opposite as before were even Roach said that Cotto was training himself.
My point is Pacquiao is top class no doubts on that, but I don’t feel ON HIS FIGHT WITH Cotto they were even because of these. Cotto is an excellent boxer and now he has addresses most of his weaknesses and I would say a rematch at a higher weight than 150 will be completely different. The one sided fight thay had on November will be thing of the past. People will see how Cotto overpower Pacquiao and at the end win via a decision. Me and a bunch will pay wahatver to be firs row just to precence history. If Pacman beats Cotto @150 I will not have more doubts and will take my hat for the Philipinno.
Give Cotto one more chance to prove himself and you will be surprise
Cotto- Pacquiao II –WE W A N T IT !!
yep.. pac vs cotto is a great matchup than pac vs may..
I don’t see even one demand coming from Paquiao before a fight with Mayweather happens. Asking for a 50/50 purse is not a demand but more fair for each other since Pacquiao is more recognized as p4p king than the unbeaten Mayweather. What is obvious Mayweather is demanding a lot–’I want this, I want that, I need him to take steroid test performed by my appointed tester, I want 60 or higher purse, I am American while Paquiao is foreigner, etc.’ Like the aborted fight schedule in March this year, Mayweather is playing games. I don’t know what it is but I think Mayweather simply does not want to fight Pacquiao out of fear that Pacquiao may demolish the unbeaten Mayweather 41-0 record, which is not better than the Julio Chavez Jr unbeaten record of 42-0 if being unbeaten is the criterion of p4p king.
