Arum didn’t make Pacquiao vs. Cotto 2 because Emanuel Steward made Cotto better

Friday, July 30, 2010

By Teddy Silk

Good ol’ Bob Arum, he thinks he knows best, but the public already has a bad taste in their mouth after hearing this farce of a boxing match Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito is happening since the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight isn’t going to happen.

If you read the boxing websites and message boards, you would see that the people are not dumb, they are not going to order another Manny Pacquiao fight again especially after his poor showing against Joshua Clottey.

The boxing fans don’t like the idea of a man who has been caught cheating getting a fight with Manny Pacquiao and earning multi-million dollars for it. You shouldn’t be rewarded for cheating. If Arum was to put Margarito against any other fighter he should have let Miguel Cotto rematch him and punish Margarito, this time Margarito would be without his illegal handwraps.

The casual fans, who don’t know anything about boxing will probably order the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito fight because they will enjoy the slugfest that will ensue. The hardcore boxing fans won’t order the fight or stream it.

I feel if Arum was going to do an in-house fight he should have at least put Manny Pacquiao against Kelly Pavlik at middleweight or Manny Pacquiao against Miguel Cotto at Jr. Middleweight for Miguel’s title.

Both Pavlik and Cotto are more deserving of a huge mega-fight against Pacquiao and a huge payday because they are both honest hardworking fighters. Margarito doesn’t deserve this type of super star fight because he is a disgrace to the sport of boxing.

The fight I thought was gonna be made since the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight fall out was the rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. I saw how strong and powerful Miguel looked at 154-pounds against Jewish fighter Yuri Foreman, who was taller and bigger than Cotto. Miguel Cotto showed patience and improved boxing skill and we must thank Emanuel Steward for that. Also, remember, Yuri Foreman was the same fighter that Manny Pacquiao avoided stating that he was too big and tall for him and Cotto destroyed the man that Manny Pacquiao avoided.

Steward, who also has a sideline job as an HBO boxing analyst, is also a legendary trainer, he trained the likes of Tommy Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya, Prince Naseem Hamed, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko to name a few. It would also be interesting to see two great boxing trainers go head to head with Freddie Roach (Pacquiao’s trainer) and Emanuel Steward (Cotto’s trainer).

With Emanuel Steward in the corner of Miguel Cotto, you have a chemistry that was missing in Cotto’s camp, Steward is not the type to demand or boss a fighter around like Cotto’s uncle Evangelista Cotto. This is why Steward and Cotto are a perfect match because Steward understands Cotto’s personality and in turn Cotto obeys Steward’s instructions because of the respect they have for each other.

Bob Arum doesn’t give Steward any credit for Cotto’s win over Yuri Foreman. Arum was really hyping Foreman up to be this new Jewish boxing superstar and is probably bitter that Cotto and Steward beat Yuri, ruining his plans for Foreman. Arum knows that Cotto has improved under the guidance of Emanuel Steward and now Cotto has a better chance at beating his cash cow Manny Pacquiao. If that fight happened, I would strongly favor Miguel Cotto at 154-pounds. Cotto had no trainer when he fought Manny Pacquiao the first time but this time he has Emanuel Steward one of the greatest trainers of all time and that is something he was missing for many years.

This guy got offended with the article?!? He must be a pactard…. its okay man. The author made several great points. Miguel Cotto looks better with Emanuel Steward, Arum is not fooling those that are true fans of the sport, and Margacheato does not deserve a match with Pacquiao. Giving him this fight only shows that he is being rewarded for cheating. These are all solid points liesensor.

Teddy, have you watch Cotto-Foreman fight? Cotto, under Steward is the same old Cotto under Santiago…Cotto was fighting a one legged boxer not because of a better trainer.

I AGREE WITH THIS ARTICLE 100%. Also understand that people are bitter cause Pacquiao-Mayweather DIDNT HAPPEN AND PROBABLY WONT.
But the truth is that there’s no excuses; Cotto lost against PacMan but then BEAT Yuri. These are 2 facts. The conditions of each fight? We just fans expressing how we feel about our fighters.
About Yury, we know he got hurt and if you know about boxing anr review the video in youtube, you can conclude that Cotto’s jab what taking him out of balance multiple times. Why you are moving from side to side back and forward the way Yury was, you can get hurt specially if you are getting hit and taken out of your balance. Anyways not even with 3 legs Yuri was going to win that night.
In summary Cotto is the champ @154 and has only 2 defeats, one of them questionable and it still VERY MARKEATEABLE. Remember this is a business and the goal here is to make profits, you know that.
I honestly don’t see any other boxer right now with the record that Cotto has, this includes a win over Mosley, yes the same one knocked out Margarito . So Im not going to say Pacquiao is not good actually is very damn good, but many of us that have been in the gym know that Coto can put an upset on him if the conditions are right. What are these conditions? A re-match at any weight over 151.

Good read…anyone who thinks COtto did not improve against Yuri..does not watch boxing..his stance and jab was much better..defense still needs work…as for Paq…I cant respect someone who takes peoples belts at a catch weight…

Margarito hasnt done anything to deserve a shot at paq..

If that what you believed then, maybe those who wrote the pre fight and post fight of Pacquiao-Margarito probably don’t know about boxing too.

Teddy Silk, if you know about boxing, how many fight do you have and what division? who was your opponents? how many wins do you have? who is your promoter? and what promotions?

I only agree with you that Margarito shouldn’t be rewarded. Everything else is just laughable. Arum promotes both Pacquiao and Margarito so it doesn’t matter to him who wins.

Too early to say if Cotto has banished his mental demons due to the bashing from Margarito and a comprehensive beat down by Manny. So any hearsay that allude . . that he is ready for Manny is just . . overly optimistic. Just ask Floyd . . he has all the physical advantages, yet he is not ready to step on the plate to face off this filipino dynamo.

I would like to see Cotto fight a few more fights against good opponents to further assess . . I do wish him well. He is good for boxing due to his warrior spirit and desire to give his very best inside the ring.

I watched that Cotto/Foreman fight, but I can’t see any reason to believe Cotto has improved. He still fights the same. He took advantage of the situation that Yuri was hurting and couldn’t take any more of his power punches.

Margarito is a strong boxer too, but I’m with Pacman’s assault-type power punching, he will go down to his knees.

Once Pacman got that belt (his 8th), it would be more interesting and practical to have that rematch with Cotto, thus unifying their belts, on April or May of 2011. Then fight Mayweather before the end of 2011. I’m sure Bob Arum has considered all these.

    hey guys, do the math.

arum already knows how much money a pacquiao-cotto fight generates.

by positioning margarito as the pac-man’s next opponent, arum expects to gain more as most people will be curious to know whether the pac-man can withstand a bigger, taller fighter at a heavier weight class like margarito, and will therefore buy the fight.

in short, cotto has nothing to do with it.

that’s why arum’s been saying that if fraud gay feather will step up and fight the pac-man for the november fight schedule, he’ll drop margarito in a heartbeat. do the math.

The “casual” fan is what helps boxing survive. This won’t fall short of the entertainment that Pac delivers. This might even be a harder fight that Mayweather.
