Boxing Outdoes UFC In Las Vegas

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

The UFC vs. Boxing debate is like comparing apples to oranges, but in terms of monetary gain boxing prevailed in November.

According to figures released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas, Nevada scored big number with the live gate.

USA Today reported that Pacquiao’s 12th round TKO win over Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand generated an $8.84 million gate with 15,470 tickets sold.  The event was sold out, no tickets were sold below face value and only 46 tickets were complimentary.

The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) 106 Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin rematch at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino attracted an attendance of 10,529, according to USA Today.

3,898 of the UFC 106 tickets valued at $2.3 million were given away for free as complimentary tickets via UFC President Dana White’s Twitter.

UFC 104 Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California also suffered at the gate and Dana White had given away thousands of free tickets to fans as well.

As far as Pay Per View numbers, the Pacquiao vs. Cotto bout did 1.25 million pay per view buys, UFC 106 numbers have not been released.

Official Pay Per View numbers are not required to be released by the  UFC/Zuffa because they are a private owned company, all numbers are confidential, any PPVnumber released are not official and are usually a guess by MMA insiders.  HBO is a public company and release official PPV numbers.

UFC 100 didnt do 1.5 million ppv buys thats bullshit, it probably did like 800,000 buys tops.

ufc gives away free tickets to hype up their brand to make it look sold out.

For me…boxing should be thankful for Manny Pacquiao, a boxer that wants the tough fights. As a casual boxing fan thats what I longed for. Thats what I get from the UFC…thats why I’m a very serious MMA fan. Besides Pacquiao vs Mayweather, which is most likely some time away with boxing negotiations the way they are, whats left for boxing?

…And if the UFCs popularity changes how boxing does business…the better for us (the fans).
