Undefeated Mexican middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will defending his WBC belt against the man considered the best middleweight in the world, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez of Argentina, at the Thomas & Mack in Las Vegas on September 15, on HBO pay-per-view.
Chavez Jr. is the son of the great Mexican boxing icon Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and is a popular draw in Mexico. He trains in Los Angeles under the tutelage of Freddie Roach, the world famous trainer best known for his star pupil and future hall of famer Manny Pacquiao. Chavez has been criticized by Sergio Martinez for being a fighter that hasn’t fought anyone and a paper champion who is holding his belt. Martinez held the WBC middleweight belt when he went up in weight from 154 to fight the champion Kelly Pavlik and beat him. Ever since that day, Martinez has stopped all of his opponents and plans on adding Chavez Jr. to the list and reclaiming his title back.
