Coming Oct 11, 2008 Showtime Championship Boxing presents a Double Header from two different countries.
IBF Light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver takes on undefeated WBC champ “Bad” Chad Dawson, and Sam Peter will defend his WBC heavyweight championship for the first time against Vitali Klitschko.
Antonio Tarver is fresh off winning the IBF belt against Clinton Woods of Great Britain, and he is making another run at the top by taking on young former WBC light heavywight champion Chad Dawson as his first title defense.
Tarver’s had an up and down career, he won some and lost some, he wanted to make a long run of title defenses after shocking the world with a vicious second round knockout of Roy Jones Jr. winning the WBA, and WBC world titles, but in his next fight he dropped the titles not wanting to pay sanctioning fees and lost to journeyman boxer Glen Johnson.
He would win the rematch against Johnson, then he would fight Jones Jr for a third time and win, it looked like he was back at the top again until he came across former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins in 2006. Tarver lost to Hopkins via Majority Decision.
Now he will take on the tough task of defending it against the best young American light heavyweight in the world.
Dawson’s undefeated at 27 and 0, he owns the WBC 175 pound championship and is coming off a big win over Glen Johnson.
For Dawson this is his chance to make a statement against a legend, he has to make an impressive statement to propel himself into the minds of the casual viewer.
Vitali Klitschko has been retired for 4 years and is coming back to the ring to recapture the WBC title he vacated.
Samuel Peter is a vicious puncher from Nigeria who lost to Vitali’s younger brother Wladimir in an all out knock down drag them out fight.
Peter was able to become a world champion for the first time beating Oleg Maskaev by knockout in March for the WBC title.
He will now try and defend it against Vitali.
Tarver vs. Dawson takes place at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas, while Klitschko vs. Peter will take place overseas in Germany at the O2 World Arena, Berlin, Germany.
