On August 22, 2009, Juan “The Baby Bull” Diaz won a unanimous decision over Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, Diaz hometown. The win was very controversial and had many boxing fans claiming it was a hometown decision robbery in favor of Diaz.
After many rounds of negotiations between Golden Boy Promotions(Diaz promoter) and Lou Dibella Promotions(Malignaggi’s promoter) to get this fight in a neutral venue, the two pugilists will finally meet again in a much anticipated rematch in Chicago.
Juan Diaz vs. Paulie Malignaggi will fight in a 12-round junior welterweight rematch on HBO Boxing After Dark. The fight will take place on Dec. 12 at UIC Pavilion in Chicago,Illinois.
The co-main event for Diaz-Malignaggi will feature the return of junior welterweight contender Victor Ortiz in a 10-round bout against Antonio Diaz.
Victor Ortiz is coming off of a TKO loss to Marcos Maidana of Argentina, in which Ortiz gave up in the 6th round after being knocked down multiple times in the fight.
