According to a report by Fightnews.com, former Puerto Rican welterweight champion, Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KOs), hired HBO boxing commentator and Hall of Fame boxing trainer, Emanuel Steward as his new head trainer. Steward is best known for guiding the career of Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns and is the head trainer of current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Miguel Cotto is coming back from a loss to Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and moving up to the 154-pound Jr.-middleweight division for his next fight. Cotto was criticized for having inexperienced trainer Joe Santiago working his corner for his fight against Pacquiao.
Santiago will still be apart of Team Cotto, but only as an assistant to Steward. Miguel Cotto will take on undefeated Jewish WBA Jr. middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KOs) on June 5th at Yankees stadium in New York, the fight will be televised on HBO and promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotions.
