Why Floyd Mayweather Jr. Gets No Love

Every time Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s name is mentioned in front of Floyd his face changes. You can almost see the agitation on his facial expression. Everywhere he goes or interview he gives the name “Pacquiao” follows him like a shadow. He is tormented day and night at the thought his own country embracing a foreign fighter when he feels he is the superior boxer, and has accomplished more in his career. He wonders to himself why the fans and media never embraced him like they do Pacquiao. How come the sponsors don’t choose him instead of Pacquiao. Watching a Pacquiao fight on T.V. he has to feel a sense of envy as every punch is treated to roars of approval from the sell out crowd.

They say Floyd Mayweather Jr. is boring, his style is not fan friendly but it is something deeper than that. If he ever wanted an honest answer why he doesn’t get the love Manny Pacquiao gets, I would have to tell him bluntly “Floyd I don’t know how else to say this but it’s simply because… your BLACK”. Now I don’t mean this in a negative way but the fact is that professional sports is over saturated and dominated by black athletes. For a black athlete to get recognition they would need to do something amazing to grasp the public’s attention. Floyd would basically have to knock out a heavyweight.

A big reason why the public is infatuated with Manny’s accomplishments is not just because he is a great boxer…but because he is an Asian great boxer. In American professional sports there are only a handful of elite athletes of Asian decent. They next closest Asian athlete would probably be Yao Ming and even he was never considered the best in his sport. Lets face it Yao is a good player, but he wouldn’t get the most all-star votes almost every year if he was black. In a perverse way this is affirmative action at work.

Floyd Mayweather shouldn’t lose sleep though. It works the other way around as well. If he only knew how many Asians are discriminated against when applying for colleges around the U.S. because there are “too many Asians”. Many schools are actually changing their acceptance criteria to balance out the racial demographics, in other words “don’t let Asian kids over populate our schools”. Floyd should understand it’s nothing personal, it’s just supply and demand.
