Who’s The Top Welterweight — Manny Pacquiao or Victor Ortiz?

If the pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. doesn’t return to boxing, who is considered the top welterweight in boxing right now between Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and “Vicious” Victor Ortiz? I have to say that “Vicious” Victor Ortiz is the better welterweight right now. He beat an undefeated prime fighter in Andre Berto and took Berto’s WBC strap in the process. Andre Berto is the same guy that Manny Pacquiao and his people ducked at 147-pounds and picked the faded legend Sugar Shane Mosley instead as an opponent for May 7th.

I have to rank Vicious Victor Ortiz above Manny Pacquiao in the welterweight division because Ortiz is a monster, and has more skill, heart, and determination to prove greatness than Manny does. Victor showed what a true warrior does. He went out there took on the undefeated WBC champion Andre Berto in his first fight at 147-pounds and from the first round attacked him like a madman. Ortiz was out to shut the critics up who called him a coward and a quitter.

The fight is already a fight of the year candidate and will go down as one of the most memorable fights of recent history, and round 6 is definitely round of the year. The punch that Berto landed on Victor Ortiz in round 6 would have put anyone to sleep including Manny Pacquiao, but Ortiz shook it off and came back to knock Berto down toward the end of the round and eventually went on to win the fight.

Victor Ortiz fought a tougher more credible opponent than Manny Pacquiao has at welterweight. Let’s not sugar coat this, Pacquiao has fought mostly washed up drained fighters, he doesn’t have a win over a top level prime welterweight coming off a dominant win. He is fighting an old Shane Mosley another Floyd Mayweather left over.

Speaking of Pacman’s opponent Shane Mosley, Mosley has a punchers chance and I am pulling for him to go all out and let Pacquiao sample some real power and speed, but I have to be realistic they probably won’t let Shane rehydrate much after weigh in’s so he can be slow and drained just like Oscar De La Hoya.

Manny wouldn’t be able to take the speed and powerful shots from Victor Ortiz or Andre Berto and that is why he chose an older Mosley who looked horrible in his last two fights. Manny has twice ducked Floyd Mayweather Jr. by refusing to take full random Olympic style drug testing before the fight.

Manny and his people know Floyd’s style would be a nightmare for him and he won’t be able to land any shots on Money May, so they try to pair the Pacman with winnable match ups instead.

The only real threats to Floyd Mayweather right now are Victor Ortiz and Sergio Martinez two fast power punching southpaws. Pacquiao hasn’t even fought a legit welterweight threat and won his recent belts at catchweights.

As of now, Victor Ortiz is the king of the welterweights until Floyd Mayweather Jr. returns.
