If Mayweather Is The Star, Why Does He Use Pacquiao’s Name To Stay Relevant?

I watched the “Star Power” Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz Los Angeles press conference on Ustream, and I laughed at the promo played before the fighters made their way down the red carpet, they really tried to make Floyd Mayweather out to be the only “Star” in boxing, I guess they must have forgot that Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is the true “Face” of the sport.

The majority of people who pay the pay per view to watch Mayweather fight are watching to see someone shut his mouth or to lose, so Floyd is using the undefeated bad guy gimmick to sell his fights, that marketing technique can only last so long, because once you lose, then, you will see how big of a star you really are. His PPV buys will drop significantly if he loses.

Mayweather fans always like to compare Floyd to Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali talked a lot of trash but he was also charming, funny, and most importantly he backed up his tough talk by fighting all the toughest guys in the ring. Floyd is no Ali because he talks big, but he rarely fights the guys the fans want him to fight, and that is why he will never gain the respect of the boxing fans.

Manny Pacquiao has some losses on his record, but he has a huge fanbase that has stuck by him even after his losses, the reason they still pay to watch him fight is because they know in each of those losses he fought his heart out and went out on his shield, not to mention they enjoy his style of fighting and know he tries his hardest to make the fight exciting for the fans.

This Mayweather vs. Ortiz press tour is more proof that Manny Pacquiao is the biggest name in boxing, not Floyd Mayweather.

The Mayweather vs. Ortiz presscons have been more about Manny Pacquiao than the actual fight. I watched both press conferences and Floyd Mayweather did more talking about Pacquiao than he did Ortiz. Floyd Mayweather uses Pacquiao’s name because he has an unhealthy obsession with Manny, and he knows it will bring more media interest to help promote his fight.

The only time Manny Pacquiao ever mentions Mayweather’s name is if someone asks him about Floyd. Watch Manny Pacquiao’s recent press conferences for his fights with Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, all of them revolved around the actual fights, and you never hear Manny talk about or even mention Floyd Mayweathers name the way Floyd has done during his recent press conferences for his fight.

It became so bad, that it pissed off Victor Ortiz and his manager, they got mad at the press conference in L.A. and they felt disrespected and tired of hearing Mayweather talk about his jealousy and obsession with Manny Pacquiao instead of focusing on their upcoming fight.

Manny Pacquiao has sponsorship deals with Nike, Hewlett Packard, and many other endorsement deals, and if Floyd was the true “Face” of boxing, he would have sponsors banging down his door to sign him up.

I’m just telling it like it is.

I am an avid fan of boxing and video games. My first fight of memory was watching Prince Naseem Hamed destroy Kevin Kelly. I enjoy all aspects of the sport. My favorite current boxer is Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. My favorite boxing match is Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo 1. I love watching boxing on Pay-Per-View more than being there live because you can really enjoy and watch the action from the best view.
