An Evening With Joe Calzaghe Saturday October 8th

September 5, 2011 By NB News Leave a Comment

Former Super Featherweight World Champion turned promoter Carl Greaves presents the opportunity for boxing fans to spend an evening with one of the greatest British boxers of all time – undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion Joe Calzaghe – at the Cedric Ford Pavilion, Newark Showground, Newark, Nottingham on Saturday 8th October.

For those attending there will be plenty to talk with Joe about, as during his magnificent career Joe not only won the WBO World Crown, after beating Chris Eubank at the Sheffield Arena on 11th October 1997, but went on to successfully defend the belt no less than twenty one times. He also secured all the IBF, WBC and WBA to become the coveted Ring Magazine Champion.

On the 4th March 2006 Joe added the IBF belt to his collection, after sensationally beating previously unbeaten Champion Jeff Lacy.

A couple of defenses followed and then in November 2007 Joe faced Mikkel Kessler at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Joe put his WBO title on the line and Kessler the WBA and WBC belts. After twelve magnificent rounds big Joe became the possessor of all the major belts.

Joe rounded out his career with two super fights, the first against Bernard Hopkins and for his final professional bout took on Roy Jones Jnr.

After forty six fights, and forty six wins, Joe hung up his gloves and in doing so entered the record books yet again, as only the fourth European to retire as an undefeated World Champion, the others being Terry Marsh, Michael Loewe and Sven Ottke. He also become one of only three undisputed and undefeated World Champions, Rocky Marciano and Ricardo Lopez being the other two.

As mentioned earlier Joe defended his WBO World Crown twenty one times, but most amazingly he held that title for an unbelievable one hundred and thirty one and half months. He not only possessed the Ring Magazine belt for thirty months but also was a two time Ring Magazine title holder, having also won the Ring belt at Light Heavyweight on his beating Bernard Hopkins in his penultimate fight and defended against Roy Jones Jnr.

On the 8th October those lucky enough to attend will get the chance to not only have a chat with Joe but will also be treated to a four course meal and a photo opportunity with him.

There will also be an auction of Sporting memorabilia, a raffle, as well as entertainment, comprising of a comedian and singer Liam Moore, the winner of Stars In Your Eyes as Phil Collins.

An Evening With Joe Calzaghe will be held at the Cedric Ford Pavilion, Newark Showground, Newark, Nottinghamshire on Saturday the 8th October.
