Is Haye making a comeback?

Just weeks after announcing his retirement on his 31st birthday on October 13 reports are circulating in the UK and Germany that former WBA champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) has plans to make a comeback.

The reports indicate that negotiations are ongoing between the Haye and Klitschko camps, and that possible venues for the fight are already being discussed. The Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany has been mentioned as a possible location for the proposed fight. Both camps are looking at early March as a target date for the match.

Haye had indicated for several years that he would retire upon his 31st birthday, but left the door open for a possible return to the ring against one of the Klitschko’s. Haye had asked for a rematch with Vladimir after his disappointing showing in their Mega fight in July, but was turned down by “Dr. Steelhammer”.

Haye was totally dominated in that fight and gave the impression that he did not want to engage the huge Ukrainian. Haye repeatedly flopped down to the canvas whenever Vladimir was in striking distance.

Initially the flop down strategy seemed to be working for Haye as the referee inexplicably deducted a point from Vladimir for pushing the “Hayemaker” to the canvas. But eventually he too tired of the continual flop downs and called one of the flops a knockdown. In short it was not a riveting performance by Haye.

It is no secret that current WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) has a huge score to settle with the “Hayemaker” over comments he made during the lead up to his fight with WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO heavyweight champion Vladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) last July.

Vitali feels that Haye insulted not only his brother Vladimir, but the Klitschko family as well. “Dr. Ironfist” was raised by a father who was an officer in the Soviet military system. With Vitali it is all about protecting ones honor, not only his honor but the honor of his family as well.

Vitali was not amused by David Haye’s antics in the lead up to the fight with his younger brother. In commenting about Vladimir’s victory over Haye after the fight Vitali said that while he was happy that Vlad had won the fight, he wanted to fight David so that he could “send him to the floor!”
