Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Will the Super Bowl of boxing ever happen?

The biggest possible fight to be made in boxing is Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., this would be boxing’s equivalent to the National Football League’s “Super Bowl” game. But that fight has been on the table for years, and it seems like unlikely to happen.

I think that the fight will happen only when it is the last fight on Manny Pacquiao’s contract with Bob Arum. The business of boxing is what is holding this fight back, and Top Rank holds the key to whether this super-fight will happen, but in my opinion, is the luster is already gone because Manny Pacquiao hasn’t looked great in his fights with Shane Mosley and his longtime rival Juan Manuel Marquez.

From the news swirling around the internet it looks like Bob Arum is getting ready to make Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley, this is a very dangerous fight for Pacquiao, but it’s a safe fight for Bob Arum because he could care less if Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Super Bowl of boxing match happens because all he cares about is if his pockets are full. Arum is after all a businessman first and he is doing what is best for himself financially since he controls both fighters.

Arum is in a no lose situation. If Bradley beats Pacquiao then Arum has a new star and Tim Bradley will be labeled the man who defeated the great Manny Pacquiao. Bradley would become the talk of the town and everyone will want to see him fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. since he beat the man that Floyd Mayweather was supposedly ducking.

But will Arum make a Timothy Bradley vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight? It depends if Bradley demands the fight, but if Bradley becomes like Pacquiao and just lets his promoter do the picking it won’t happen.

If I were to make a guess if the “Super Bowl” of boxing would ever  happen, I would say that it would only happen if it’s the last fight on Manny Pacquiao’s contract with Top Rank and Arum is ready to cash out after milking the golden cow all he could. Arum doesn’t care if Manny loses or if Manny is no longer in his prime when he fights Floyd Mayweather, all he cares about is the money he makes from Manny Pacquiao.
