Former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto has been training under the tutelage of Bay Area trainer Virgil Hunter for his ring return on September 6 on the undercard of the Adrien Broner vs. Emmanuel Taylor Showtime fight at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Berto hasn’t fought since being stopped by Mexican veteran Jesus Soto Karass on July 27, 2013, he suffered an injury during the bout and has been focusing on recovery and rehabilitation.
Virgil Hunter who trains undefeated super-middleweight champion Andre Ward, is helping Berto work on his defense and boxing skills. The plan is to avoid making the same mistakes of getting into unnecessary slug fests.
Lucas Matthysse vs. Roberto Ortiz will also be part of the Showtime Broner vs. Taylor card. Matthysse who fights in the 140-pound division will be a possible foe to face Broner should the two fighters win their upcoming bouts.
