Unbeaten Russian WBO light-heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1-22 KOs) will co-headline the HBO Boxing After Dark card on August 2nd at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Brandon Rios vs. Diego Chaves main event will take place at a different site.
Kovalev’s opponent will be undefeated Australian boxer Blake Caparello (20-0-1-6 KOs). Caparello doesn’t present a threat to Kovalev punching wise, but he does box well and will try to outbox the powerful Russian slugger.
What makes this fight intriguing is due to the recent news that Bernard Hopkins made an agreement to fight Kovalev should he get passed Caparello on Saturday night. It will set up a super fight and a title unification for the IBF, WBA and WBO 175-pound belts.
The Hopkins vs. Kovalev match would also present a styles match up, the old veteran with ring savvy versus the rugged and hard hitting puncher from Russia.
