Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero was reportedly arrested for domestic violence after allegedly beating up his wife. The doctor’s at the Los Andes University hospital, where Valero’s wife was being treated, report that she had a collapsed lung and several other injuries. Valero also showed up to the hospital in a violent rage, and was ready to physically harm hospital employees.
Valero is no stranger to run in’s with the law, he was wanted for domestic assault against his mother and sister, he had a DUI in Texas (the only state commission in America that permits him to box), and got in trouble for carrying an illegal firearm.
Edwin Valero is not the only boxer recently accused of spousal abuse, former heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield was charged with spousal abuse after he hit his wife Candi multiple times during a dispute over church donations, charges were later dropped by his wife Candi Holyfield.
Edwin Valero is the current WBC lightweight champion and promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, the same promoter who promoters Manny Pacquiao. Arum mentioned Edwin Valero’s name as a possible future opponent for Manny Pacquiao. Valero being labeled a wife beater would likely hurt his chances at landing a lucrative fight with Pacquiao in Texas.
Arum was also thinking about moving Valero up to junior welterweight and have him face Lamont Peterson for his 140-pound debut.
