HBO will have their first pay-per-view boxing event of 2011 on April 9th with a card headlined by Mexican boxing legend Erik “El Terrible” Morales versus Marcos “El Chino” Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Erik Morales is best known for his trilogies with fellow Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera and current pound-for-pound king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Morales was the last man to defeat Manny Pacquiao when he won a decision in 2005, Pacquiao avenged his loss by stopping Morales in two other contests.
Marcos Maidana is best known for his win over Victor Ortiz and his 2010 “Fight of the Year” with WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan, a fight Maidana lost by decision.
The Morales vs. Maidana bout will be contested at 140-pounds for the vacant WBA light welterweight belt.
The pay-per-view will also feature a solid undercard with former junior middleweight champ Ronald “Winky” Wright vs. Matthew Macklin and a lightweight match between former champs Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero vs. Michael Katsidis.
Two of HBO’s biggest stars Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao left HBO to rival network SHOWTIME with their own pay-per-view’s, Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga on March 12 and Manny Pacquiao vs. “Sugar” Shane Mosley on May 7.
Tickets for “Action Heroes” Morales vs. Maidana go on sale Thursday, Feb. 17 at 10:00 am PT, tickets are priced modestly at $350, $250, $150, $75, $50 and $25.
Golden Boy Promotions will host a press conference with the fighters on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 in Los Angeles, California to formally announce the upcoming April 9th HBO pay-per-view event.
