The middleweight king Sergio Martinez will fight Ireland’s Matthew Macklin on Saint Patrick’s day in New York, and the luck of the Irish won’t be with Macklin tonight, because Martinez will win this fight by KO in the later rounds.
I think Macklin plays right into Sergio’s style, he is aggressive but not very intelligent or defensive. Sergio Martinez specializes in fighting aggressive fighters, if you come at him he can fight going backwards and counter you with power shots you don’t see coming like the one he knocked Paul Williams out with.
Macklin will make the fight tough while it lasts, but I see Sergio Martinez just peppering him with combination punches from awkward angles and get out to the side before Macklin can answer back. The fight will be bloody and I see Martinez delivering a sensational knockout after round 10. Hopefully after this fight we can see Sergio Martinez in against WBC middleweight champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. but the fight will only happen if Bob Arum is willing to make it happen.
Sergio Martinez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are in a class of their own, I have Mayweather at the top spot, Martinez as number two, and Wladimir Klitschko at three. All three of these boxers have consistently dominated their divisions against the best available opposition. The reason I don’t have Manny Pacquiao at the third spot is because he hasn’t beat anyone in spectacular style in a while, he lost the fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in my opinion, and his choice of opposition has been poor. I have to give Manny Pacquiao credit for taking on a young hungry lion like Timothy Bradley so that is a positive step in the right direction, but Pacquiao has slipped a lot and I don’t see that fight being a walk in the park for him. If Pacquiao can beat Bradley impressively I will put him back at the 3 spot, but if Sergio Martinez gets upset by Matthew Macklin I will move him to the 4th spot and put Wladimir Klitschko at third and Pacquiao as number two pound-4-pound.
Sergio Martinez vs. Matthew Macklin is live on HBO March 17, 2012 (St. Patrick’s Day) 10PM ET/7PM PT.
