Boxing Legend Carlos Ortiz “I Fell In Love With The Philippines”

Monday, November 9, 2009

In a recent interview with El Nuevo Dia, Puerto Rican boxing legend Carlos Ortiz shares his thoughts on the upcoming Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight, and recalls his time in the Philippines.

Ortiz compares Pacquiao to the late Flash Elorde (Ortiz fought Elorde in 1964, 1966 and won both fights by ko in the 14th round) and believes Pacquiao will present problems for Miguel Cotto.

“Elorde was strong and hit hard, Pacquiao is the same kind of fighter.  They are same in that respect. But Pacquiao is a very aggressive southpaw. One has to really understand how to fight southpaws and Cotto is going to have a problems there,” Ortiz said. “Elorde was a good fighter as well as Pacquiao but I can’t really say who is better.”

Ortiz also recalls his time in the Philippines and how hospitable the people were to him after he defeated Flash Elorde.

“If I were to be born again as a boxer, I would move to the Philippines. In the Philippines they treated me as if I was one of them. I fell in love with the Philippines with how well they treated me. They are very good people over there. You don’t  have any idea of how well I was treated,” Ortiz told El Nuevo Dia.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto “FirePower” will air live on HBO Pay-Per-View, November 14th.

Be sure to tune in for the finale of HBO 24/7 Pacquiao-Cotto on November 13th,  the day before the mega bout.  You can catch all the previous episodes on HBO ON DEMAND.

    HAI CARLOS!!!
I was still in college when you KOed our beloved Elorde. You were really great. No question about that. All the while, I honestly thought you were already dead.

    God Bless Carlos.
Good thing he and Flash had a reunion in NY when Flash was named WBC’s best jr light champ along Arguello.
Carlos is a top 5 lightweight of all time in many books. Great fighter.
I believe he still drives a cab for a living.

That was then. Now, there are so many moronic, pacnuthuggers who do nothing but dig a hole for the few good Filipinos left. I wish these pacnuthuggers think before they post really degrading remarks. There are some sample posts here. You get complemented and yet you give out uncalled for nasty remarks. NAKAKAHIYA

I think Carlos Ortiz went back to the Philippines some 4 or 5 years ago to receive a special citation from the Elorde family foundation. And of course you can cahracterize that trip of Ortiz as some sort of a sentimental journey as well. Back then, I thought Carlos Ortiz was Filipino as there are hundreds of Carlos Ortizes in the Philipppines.

    To Noglo

Aside from Harold Gomes, Carloz Ortiz was also honored by the Elorde Family.

Thanks to Carlos Ortiz for sharing his experience in the Philippines in the sixties(by the way, in the 60’s, Philippines was the second richest nation in Asia at that timne.) But even though he lost to Flash Elorde, he will still feel the same warmth and hospitality of the Pilipinos. Look at Erik Morales, although he lost to Pacquiao, they treated him and his entourage like a Royal Family whenever he visits the Philippines. But make no mistake of the hospitality because it is not a sign of weakness or inferiority complex. In fact, it is scriptural to treat a guest or stranger the best respect one can offer.

Well i visited the phillippines and i am half PR. But i didnt have the same type of trip. Yes the people are hospitable but that is the working people. The owners and authorities will hustle u for every penny. Even the airport charges P750 terminal fee. My fiancee is pinay and i speak some tagalog and cebuano; but i really dont feel comfortable in going back. Also there are streets with no traffic signs.
