Manny Pacquiao and Mark McGwire Steroid Accusations in Sports

Shocking news on Jan. 11, 2010, Mark McGwire admitted to taking steroids during the 1990′s including his 1998 record breaking year. Well the news is not so shocking to those people who already suspected that former Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals baseball player Mark McGwire took steroids and performance enhancing drugs during his home run reign in 1998 when he beat and surpassed Roger Maris’ single season home run record of 61 home runs with 70 home runs.

During McGwire’s home run battle with Chicago Cubs Sammy Sosa in 1998, baseball was brought back to the forefront because baseball fans craved the power hitting home run hitters the same way boxing loves the action packed aggressive fighters who go for the Knock out’s like the current pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao.

McGwire and Sammy Sosa were helping baseball at a time when baseball was suffering from ego’s and player strikes over money and contracts, Pacquiao has helped boxing by being the anti Floyd Mayweather Jr., Floyd was everything people disliked about boxing, he fought extremely boring fights, handpicked opponents, fighting only for money and ego’s, Pacquiao like McGwire and Sosa was everything opposite of Mayweather Jr. he was fan friendly, an all out action fighter, and a humble human being outside the ring and people embraced his positive image.

Baseball like boxing was dropping down in public interest over the years, but Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr., and Sammy Sosa’s chase at breaking Roger Maris’ single-season home run record was the talk of the town and helped put baseball back on the top.

At the time McGwire was suspected of using steroids along with many other baseball players like Barry Bonds who mysteriously increased with size and in home run averages. McGwire claimed he was only taking an over the counter testosterone booster called Andro(androstenedione) and Creatine Monohydrate.

Androstenedione was banned bay WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), the NFL and the IOC but was not banned in MLB (Major League Baseball).

Bonds who was also listed on The Mitchell Report (The Mitchell Report released on December 13, 2007 was a result of George J. Mitchell’s 20-month investigation into performance-enhancing drug use in Major League Baseball (MLB)) has been associated with Victor Conte’s BALCO Laboratories the company who created designer steroids that could go undetected so athletes could get an advantage without getting caught if they were tested.

Boxer Sugar Shane Mosley admitted in 2003 that he took EPO and performance enhancing drugs from BALCO when he fought Oscar De La Hoya.

McGwire was outed by his former Oakland Athletics teammate Jose Canseco who wrote a tell all book naming players in baseball that he claimed took steroids or human growth hormones.  Canseco ratted out many players and claimed he helped inject McGwire with steroids when they played together. Canseco was hated for his exposing of players, but Canseco was telling the truth on many of the accusations.

Now boxing has a steroid controversy of it’s own, like McGwire, Manny Pacquiao the man who brought back major interest to the sport of boxing due to his dominating, vicious, relentless climb in the weight classes has been under the suspicion of being on steroids or performance enhancing drugs because of his refusal to take randomized blood tests and how impressively he destroyed much bigger men.

Pacquiao like McGwire and Bonds went up in weight and in power as well, Pacquiao had punching power and speed at the lower weights but his ability to carry his speed and power with him is unheard of in boxing.  People were amazed how this fighter can all of a sudden defy boxing logic and do what no one in boxing history has ever done by winning 7 titles in 7 different weight classes.

Questions were raised when Floyd Mayweather Sr. started making claims that Manny Pacquiao was on something, the rumors spread like wildfire and soon other boxing fans and boxers were making the same unproven accusations about Pacquiao.

The Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight died because of a strict Olympic style drug testing procedure that Mayweather requested for the bout and Pacquiao rejected because he didn’t feel comfortable taking blood the day before the fight.

When Manny Pacquiao refused to abide by the blood testing it raised questions, the same questions that fans suspected of McGwire and Sosa when they vehemently denied using steroids.

I personally don’t believe Manny Pacquiao is taking steroids, but the public opinion is what matters in these type of situations. The Mayweather family has made unproven steroid/performance enhancing drug allegations that they stand by.

Pacquiao has filed a lawsuit against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Floyd Mayweather Sr., and Golden Boy Promotions (Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer) over the Steroid accusations.

Like McGwire and Barry Bonds the public suspected and some already made their judgment of both guys before they had any substantial proof.  Bonds has never admit to steroid use but has been associated with it, while McGwire after years of pleading the fifth finally came clean on January 11, 2010.

The only difference here is that Manny Pacquiao is requried by athletic commission to take a mandatory urine drug test before every fight and he  doesn’t have a history of taking steroids,  or has he even been associated with steroids in the past, in fact he has never ever failed a drug test in all of his years boxing.

Mayweather Jr. already planted a seed of doubt in the minds of some boxing fans that Pacquiao is on some type of steroid. Pacquiao didn’t deserve this type of stigma and people have already made their prejudgments on the Filipino boxer whether it be positive or negative.

The word Steroids is the most damaging word that can be associated with an athlete because he is labeled a cheat and his records are tarnished forever or his image in the mind of fans is no longer the same once that athlete is associated with Steroids.

Even though I side with Manny Pacquiao and I honestly believe his innocence I hope when he faces Joshua Clottey in March, that he takes the blood tests he suggested in his compromise just so people will see he is clean.

hey stupid D. Mead, is that your real name? Don’t compare all your AMERICAN athletes to Pacman. They were discovered using Steroids through AMERICAN BALCO company which gave the authority the list of their athlete clients and those athletes have no choiced but to admit it to avoid being prosecuted by the legal court. When they were using it and and winning and gaining world records did they tell the whole world about this BALCO company that is making this designer steroids that in anyway cannot be detected by latest technology in blood and urine testing? And until now they dont still dont have the best technology in blood testing because those drug companies can make designer steroids faster than those government commisions were not able to detect it. Pacman has been fighting inside American soil and has his namen been associated with BAlCO or other drug companies? No because he is not using any steroids and what you have is just baseless accusations

there are no docs or people to link pacquaio to steroids. In the case of McGwire, sosa, clemens there are. that was the difference.
Mayweather Jr had been linked to xylocaine which is banned in many states. Why single out Pacquiao then who had never been linked to any illegal drugs. Instead ask the mayweathers to prove that he never used xylocaine. these guys has had history of use of illegal drugs.
wow lot of stupids took the line of a convicted drug dealer Floyd Sr.

    to John:

Hey Stupid not only Americans are watching Pacman’s fights. Different nationalities in America and all over the world are paying to watch a worthwhile and action fight and for those who could pay more for the plane ticket, hotels and sits to see it live.

It is not only Pacman that has more gain but also your country because Pacman is helping America’s economy with all his fights by paying the correct taxes, and when there is a lot of people coming it means good business. Ask IRS so you will know the truth and not just your own speculations.

Wow! And yet pachaters never stopped discrediting pac, Diaz was way overrated, Oscar was weight drained and past his prime, Hatton was shot and had zero defense, Clotto was shot, still hurting from the Margarito loss and oh according to his haters, Clotto is not any bigger than Pacquiao anyway and so was Hatton

clearly the Mayweather bandwagon is spreading the case of GUILTY until proven innocent against Pacquiao, who underwent all the rigors of drug testing imposed and demanded by the Nevada Boxing Commission. Unlike McGwire, Manny had abided with all the legal rules of the game and therefore must be considered clean beyond reasonable doubt.

Let’s get something clear here. Manny AGREED to the blood test as long as its not done a day before the fight. He also AGREED to have his blood taken right after the fight. All these blood test in addition to the normal drug testing imposed and demanded by the Nevada Boxing Commission.

@Neo1′s Comment: I totally agree with you. Pacquiao haters kept discrediting Manny by coming up with all excuses before this steroid allegation. Now they have something new. Pac haters should make up their mind.

I personally think that Manny is the cheat!! Im so sick of this Manny Pac worshiping, its sickening! I was originally a pac-fan, not a Mayweather fan, until Manny’s camp lied about Mayweather not wanting to compromise and not wanting the fight and then the very next day, Mayweather makes a statement saying “Ill sign the paper right here, right now, Ive agreed to a 14 day negotiation….”

Then GBP tried their absolute hardest to get Manny to come to the table, but they refused and kept looking for other fights, lying to our faces by trying to blame Mayweather!!!

Look, the bottom line is that Manny is scared to take a blood test because I think he realizes that he cant win without what hes taking. He cant. I now believe that he is scared to take the tests because he is cheating! Who else would turn down the event to save boxing and $40 million for 2 table spoons of blood (after lying about the reasons you dont want to take blood)?!?!?!?! Sounds unbelievably suspect!

NOt to mention that Teddy Atlas came out about those emails that were sent making Pacquiao look like a worthless cheat!

There’s a bunch of buffoons in this thread who have no clue of reality and fantasy.

Manny agreed to do the tests 30 days before the fight and right after the fight. If he wins an tested POSITIVE, guess what, his victory will be nullified and FloydM gets his golden egg, his ZERO losses making his record still unblemished.

NOW, who can tell me that this condition isn’t fair???

Why are you comparing Manny and Mark, the former is being accused without evidence so far and the latter is a quilty user.

The guy named Floyd Mayweather is a proven drug user – illegal drug to be exact – Xylocaine used to numb your fist (broken-LOL) and make punches received painless. The audacity of this Fraud to accuse someone of drug use that he is a guilty punk himself, what a hypocrite and a cheater – ah yes, he also cheated Juan Manuel Marquez by coming overweight over agreed limit, what a genuine CHEATER, FRAUD AND A COWARD.

Let him pick Adam Lambert (from American Idol) this should be a fight for him, LOL.

    This is an absolute outrage.
Nevada State Athletic Commission under its highly respected executive director Keith Kizer is “beside themselves” over the Mayweather demands
and said “their drug testing is the best in the world and it’s an insult to them.”
We questioned the motives and asked “who is this ignorant, illiterate kid demanding this. Who is he? (Mayweather) This has never ever happened in professional boxing.” Pacquiao, in a statement issued by his adviser Michael Koncz said
he had always wanted athletes to serve as role models in every sport and to keep sports free from drugs and that he was willing to undergo tests as he has always done in the past and come clean.
Koncz said “we wanted to do the fight because that’s what the people wanted, but obviously Mayweather is scared and looked for a way out.
Ariza said he is convinced that Mayweather
is “just posturing and the reality of the situation is Mayweather is looking for a reason to get out of this fight because Manny is going to give him the beating of a lifetime.
He will sustain a beating that he never ever endured in his whole career in boxing.
What he feels in his own small mind is that his legacy will go down being beaten by Manny Pacquiao.”

Steroid use is just too common. A lot of pressure on athletes to do better. Maybe the coaches need to start getting fined as well to help stop this

The death of your argument, ‘boxing fan’, is that Mayweather is willing to undergo RANDOM blood and urine testing.
    Understand?
    ________________________
This person who made this comment obviously is dumb. Mayweather agrees on this random blood testing because his game plan is to hit and run and win by UD. He doesnt have to worry about Manny’s punches because he was weakened by the stupid random blood testing taken from him during fight night. Gayweather however, dont have to worry as his goal is to earn more points. NOW MY QUESTION FOR YOU, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GETTING BLOOD BEFORE FIGHT NIGHT AND MINUTES AFTER THE FIGHT?? AS YOU CAN SEE, YOUR IDOL KENTUCKY FLOYD CHICKEN, REFUSED TO HAVE A BLOOD TAKEN FROM MANNY, EVEN SECONDS AFTER THE FIGHT BECAUSE MANNY WILL COME OUT SO STRONG, AND HE CANT WIN A UD THROUGH HIS FAMOUS HIT AND RUN STYLE BECAUSE MANNY’S PUNCHES, MANILA ICE RIGHT AND ASTEROID (NOT STEROID, IDIOT!) LEFT WILL KNCK HIM OUT. THATS ALL.

I don’t know about his nutrition, but pacman batters around bigger men because he fights like a martial artist – his power is from within ( the chi)it is electric and dynamic as opposed to the traditional ‘muscle’ puncher. Unlike most methodical boxers, he doesn’t separate speed power, balance, footwork, and their various rythms from each other – they’re all extensions of his buzzsaw attack – setting up even more relentless blows – which is what makes him such a complete fighter. Small Martial artists have been known to knock out much bigger men – so from the martial arts perspective, pacman’s accomplishments don’t seem so unnatural.

Manny definitely is willing to prove that he is not on steroids or any performance enhancing drugs. He is willing to do blood tests during the promotional of the fight, 24 days before the fight and immediately thereafter of the fight. If Manny uses any prohibited substances then it will come out immediately after the fight before he goes to the bath room and his blood is taken. He is willing to do that, but Mayweather tries to abuse the scene of taking 14 days before the fight without any expert opinion support. This is a clear evasion of the fight that he signed in the contract. NSAC should sue him for breach of contract to fight on March 13, 2010 which he had signed with Manny Pacquiao. HOPE THAT IS CLEAR ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND.

The silent majority supports manny pacquiao a humble man with no history of cheating only the noisy few support an arrogant boasting all talking with no action with history of cheating and drug use floyd mayweather”

Zans, I agree with you. The L.A. Times polls says over 80% blame Mayweather for being a chicken. “Court of public opinon” is really only applicable in the U.S., since probably all of asia is on manny’s side. It’s obvious that there is some reacial element at the core of Pac-haters. Some have actually been truthful coming out and saying “filipinos” can’t play sports and need “steroids” to succeed. The truth is that the very small percentage of closet-racists like to come on these message boards and spread lies because it hurts their own psyche to see an “ASIAN” champion. We need to understand that not all americans are racists like this, but the majority of the polls are against Floyd almost 4:1.

I hate when people say “don’t use the race card” because that’s all this is. Why single out Manny?

The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs.

But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, a driver called Almighty God, you will make it to a place called Success.

    THAT’S WHY MANNY IS SUCCESSFUL.
